INQUESTS and Proportionality are going to be the hot topics that are up for debate when our Law Costs Conference gets underway next month.

Taking place on October 6 at Alderman Fenwick House in Newcastle, this year’s event will feature guest talks from Leila Benyounes and District Judge Searl.

A clinical negligence and inquests specialist at Parklane Plowden Chambers, Leila is set to discuss the practicalities of attending an Inquest, securing funding and claiming Costs.

As a Barrister, the Assistant Coroner for Gateshead and South Tyneside and a Recorder on the North Eastern Circuit, Leila is a highly-skilled advocate who acts for interested persons in high-profile and media-sensitive Article 2 jury inquests.

Her 45-minute lecture will be followed by a Q&A session, before she hands over the reins to DJ Searl to deliberate on the topic of Proportionality.

DJ Searl’s discussion will centre around how to apply proportionality for Detailed Assessment and CCMC hearings, before opening up the floor for any relevant questions.

With guests due to arrive for refreshments from 2.30pm, our very own Solicitor Advocate Seamus Kelly (pictured right) will kick off proceedings with some insight into recent changes to case law affecting costs in Clinical Negligence and high-value Personal Injury claims.

To conclude the event on a high, guests will get the opportunity to mingle and network for a few hours whilst free drinks and a buffet are served.

Speaking ahead of the occasion, director Lee Carter said: “There’s always a great atmosphere at our Conference and I’m sure all the guests are looking forward to hearing from two highly-experienced speakers.

“Both are very well-respected figures on the North Eastern Circuit and I’m expecting them to share some excellent insights.”
