CARTER Burnett is delighted to announce that two key figures from the North East law circuit will be guest speakers at our 2022 Law Costs Conference.

Clinical Negligence and Inquests specialist Leila Benyounes, of Parklane Plowden Chambers, will be joined by District Judge Searl when our annual event is held at Alderman Fenwick House in Newcastle later this year.

Ranked as leading junior in Legal 500 and Chambers and Partners for Clinical Negligence, Inquests and Inquiries; Leila (pictured above) represents both Claimants and Defendants- including private clients, public authorities and Government departments.

A highly-skilled advocate, Leila is Joint Head of the Inquests Team at Parklane Plowden Chambers and regularly acts for interested persons in high-profile and media-sensitive Article 2 jury inquests. Leila is appointed as an Assistant Coroner for Gateshead and South Tyneside and a Recorder on the North Eastern Circuit.

Leila also acts a freelance tutor on the Bar Course at BPP Law School in Leeds, whilst tutoring medical students on the Medical Ethics module at the University of Leeds.

Assigned to the North Eastern Circuit, based at Newcastle-upon-Tyne Combined Court Centre, DJ Searl has been appointed to the role since April 2013 and is the Regional Costs Judge.

As such she will be able to offer significant insight as to various costs issues to include proportionality with a focus towards catastrophic injury and clinical negligence disputes at Detailed or Provisional Assessment.

Her long and successful law career first began when admitted as a solicitor in 1998, practising for more than a decade before joining the Ministry of Justice.

This year’s Law Costs Conference will take place on October 6 at the outstanding Alderman Fenwick House, one of Newcastle’s oldest buildings.

To complement the guest talks from Leila Benyounes and DJ Searl, our own Costs Law experts will also be on hand to discuss the latest issues affecting costs in Clinical Negligence and high-value Personal Injury claims.

Details about how to obtain tickets will be released nearer the date but, with last year’s showpiece attracting a near-capacity crowd, we are expecting similar levels of significant interest again this time around.
