TWO experienced Barristers and a seasoned Judge will provide unrivalled Costs insight after agreeing to be guest speakers for our 2023 Law Costs Conference.

Taking place in Leeds on October 11, Barristers Abigail Telford and Andrea Barnes will be joined on stage by HHJ Mark Gosnell.
Scheduled just two weeks after the new Extension to Fixed Recoverable Costs rules come into effect, the event promises to be popular with plenty of burning issues up for debate.

His Honour Judge Gosnell has gained extensive experienced in the legal sector since starting his career as a Solicitor in 1981.
As a Practice partner, he specialised in personal injury and clinical negligence work before being appointed Deputy District Judge in 1993 and a District Judge in 1998. During his time as a District Judge in Manchester, HHJ Gosnell specialised in industrial disease, catastrophic injury and clinical negligence cases. He was also a Regional Costs Judge before being appointed a Recorder in 2005 both in the criminal and civil jurisdictions.

In October 2010, he was appointed Designated Civil Judge of Leeds and North Yorkshire before becoming DCJ of the Bradford and West Yorkshire group of courts in 2012. Since 2010, he has held authorisation to sit in the High Court and County Court on Chancery claims and claims in the Circuit Commercial Court.

HHJ Gosnell is also a tutor on the Specialist Jurisdictions Course at the Judicial College and lectures extensively on case management, housing law and costs.

Barrister Abigail Telford is no stranger to public speaking and regularly gives seminars and talks on all areas of her practice at Parklane Plowden Chambers since being called in 2011.

Described in the Legal 500 as ‘a fantastic barrister who is very reliable and thorough’; Abigail is an active member of the Chambers’ serious injury, clinical negligence and inquest teams. A confident advocate, she regularly appears in Civil and Coroners Court.
Abigail is also a committee member of the Leeds & District Medico-Legal Society, where she is involved in the organisation and recruitment of civil pupils in her role as Head of Civil Pupillage.

A specialist in complex costs issues, Barrister Andrea Barnes is a tenacious and enthusiastic advocate at Normanton Chambers.
In her role as joint Head of Chambers, Andrea undertakes a mixture of costs, clinical negligence, personal injury and inquest work. Plain speaking and commercially astute, she is not afraid to advance complex or unusual legal arguments.

Prior to getting the Call in 1999, she worked for a Defendant insurer solicitor on cases involving fatal and catastrophic injuries. A large proportion of Andrea's practice still involves high-value, complex, catastrophic or fatal incidents.
