He first earned a degree in Politics and Public Relations, before undertaking a further degree in Law, graduating in 2012. Since then, he has dedicated his career to commercial costs, developing a deep understanding of the complexities of costs litigation and working on several notable cases – including Involnert Management Inc v Aprilgrange Limited and Others [2015] EWHC 2834 (Comm) and Sarpd Oil International Ltd v Addax Energy SA [2016] EWCA Civ 120.
Committed to continuous learning, Matt has aspirations to further his expertise by undertaking a PhD. His analytical approach and strategic insight make him a valuable asset in cost-related matters.
Away From Work
Based in Walkington, a village near Beverley, Matt enjoys a busy family life with his wife and two young children. When he’s not spending time with his son and daughter, he can often be found exploring the countryside with his Labrador, Maple, who is now 4 and a half years old.
Matt has recently taken up climbing and makes the most of his free time by bouldering at Rock City in Hull. While he once ran an incredible 80 to 90 miles a week (yes, really!), he prefers the convenience of his Peloton these days, swapping the open roads for indoor cycling from the comfort of home.
What music do you like – any specific genre or artists?
I listen to quite a lot of kids’ music when we are in the car, but I really like The Flobots, an alternative hip hop band from Denver who write political rap.
What’s your favourite food?
I suffer from anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction to eggs which can be life-threatening, so I rarely eat out at restaurants but I do love cooking and can rustle up a delicious mushroom risotto – paired with a Malbec.
Do you have a favourite book or author?
I do like Ken Follett’s books, especially Pillars of the Earth, a historical fiction novel in 12th century England, and A Dangerous Fortune, another historical novel. But my favourite book is The Wager by David Grann, based on the true story of a British ship wreck in 1740 and the survivors’ fight for survival.
What film or boxset would you recommend to others?
The one TV show I would definitely recommend is Outlander, a historical drama about a former World War II nurse who travels back in time - it's well worth a watch if you can cope with eight seasons.
How would you describe yourself in 5 words?
Pragmatic, strategic, family-orientated, innovative, competitive.
If you could go back in time, what advice would you give your younger self?
Work harder at school - and take more risks.
